about

Have you seen Alaska / Tell me, have you even tried?

After being in college for a couple of years, I, like many at this time, had reached my limit with school, with relationships, with responsibility, and with just about everything else in my life. I was ready to chuck it all and hit the road. My destination was clear - anywhere on the west coast. At the time, California had become a strange fascination of mine. So, I devised a plan, abandon everything and leave. There was this girl I had become infatuated with over the last few weeks and I wanted her to come with me. Even though she was interested in the trip (or at least played along), it never happened. She was weary, and rightly so. She hardly knew me and did not share my need for escape. Without a companion, my dreams were dashed. In the end, my desperate trip to California never happened, and by the end of the semester, I left the town of Tallahassee for the familiarity of Tampa Bay.

So it goes.

So, why an uninspiring story from college and why cover songs written by An Epic At Best? I’m not really sure, but I do know whenever I hear “Carolina” I often play the role of the revisionist and relive an alternative reality in which my failed trip was a life altering success. Still, the lyrics and music from An Epic At Best’s two albums always hit me with a ting of nostalgia and the familiar. Could it be that I share an unique bond with these individuals? Or could it be that the twenty-something, white-boy-experience is rather commonplace in these parts? Regardless of the reason, this band was amazing and I loved seeing them live, playing shows together, and listening to their albums. I hope I did the songs justice and if you have never heard the originals, do yourself a favor and track them down.

Have I seen Alaska? Not yet, but I did make it to California and many other amazing places over the last 10 years. The only difference is now my dreams, though constantly changing, are not so easily dashed.
